Education Research Practice Network
A collaborative space for teachers and researchers, breaking down the barriers between research and practice.
What is the ERPN?
ERPN is a network which connects teachers and researchers, supporting the exchange and co-construction of knowledge and shaping the education of our young people.
What is our vision?
To support educational outcomes across schools and wider learning communities by supporting closer collaboration across research, innovation and practice.
What do we do?
ERPN has several strands of activity:
- Teacher Development and professional learning to support the wider development of teachers and school leaders
- Equip teachers and schools to be research informed and research active
- Facilitate engagement with our research, innovation and development of practice
- Support further accredited study in Education
ERPN provides opportunities for teachers and researchers from University of Southampton to meet together and work together on research projects in a wide range of exciting areas of exploration. Our regular seminar series share findings from cutting edge research and our annual conference is a chance to tackle knotty educational questions and get ‘hands on’ with research.
See the tabs at the bottom of the page for more information about each strand of ERPN activity.
What makes ERPN different to other education research outlets?
ERPN is a key knowledge broker between educational research and teachers in schools where there is a genuine dialogue between research and practice. However, ERPN also provides a shared space for teachers and researchers to work collaboratively and supports teachers to be researching practitioners by taking an active part in building the educational knowledge base.
ERPN is based at Southampton Education School, University of Southampton; a founder member of the Russell Group. Our work is underpinned by high quality educational research with internationally recognised impact from across our research centres.

ERPN as part of Southampton Education School
Our events, activities and teacher development draws upon our internationally recognised research and high quality pedagogy and practice. At University of Southampton, 92% of our research is deemed to be world-leading (REF, 2021), we are in the 10% of UK Universities and 4th in the Russell Group for impact, demonstrating the real-world benefit of our research.
Based within Southampton Education School, ERPN has direct access to the researchers who are generating the research outcomes being used in schools. Through ERPN, teachers and school leaders can hear about our world-leading research directly and learn about the ways their research can support practice.
Alongside our research, we have a long established reputation for Initial Teacher Education and development. The Hartley Institute- which would ultimately become the University of Southampton- began its involvement in teacher education in the 1890s. Today we proudly educate hundreds of beginner teachers annually through our Outstanding ITE programmes (Ofsted, 2023). Our team of ITE practitioners have a reputation for pedagogic innovation and excellence and seamlessly bridge the research-practice divide to ensure high quality teacher education and development.

ERPN SEND conference, it was absolutely amazing and so informative. To be honest, it was the best conference/workshop I have ever attended. Please let us know any information on future events I would highly recommend them – they had an honest approach!
