Short Course in Mentoring: Developing Beginner or Early Career Teachers

What is the Short Course about?

This Short Course is designed for anyone working as a mentor to beginner or early career teachers. It is designed to give you practical skills and knowledge for mentoring, underpinned by evidence on how beginner and early career teachers learn and develop. Content is mapped to the ITTECF and consolidates and extends foundational knowledge of mentoring gained at level 1 and level 2 training- which are a pre-requisite for this Short Course.

If you have not attained Level 1 and Level 2 mentor training (or equivalent) and would like to attend our Level 1 and Level 2 mentor training as part of your Short Course, these can be accessed for an additional £50 (+VAT) per Level (these are free of charge for mentors who are supporting a student teacher with the University of Southampton PGCE programmes).

If you have attained Level 1 and 2 mentor training through another provider (for example NASBTT) then you will be asked to provide a brief summary of the knowledge and skills gained in this training.

Having successfully completed this Short Course you will have:

  • a critical understanding of different theoretical and evidence-based perspectives on mentoring and coaching teachers in the very early stages of their career.
  • developed your understanding of the principles and practices of mentoring and coaching, utilising established models and approaches
  • developed your own reflective practice through critical evaluation of your own experiences of mentoring and coaching
  • raised your awareness of research findings and developed your ability to use these to inform practice.
  • applied your practical understanding of the principles of mentoring to your particular school context and within the context of a particular ITE training programme.
  • developed your understanding of selected pedagogies for teacher development with a focus on the pedagogies of Practice Based Teacher Education
  • deepened your knowledge of the best ways to develop models of professional development and dialogue and learn how to implement these in your context.

When does the Short Course run?

The duration of this course is 20 hours. 12 of these hours are accrued through completion of level 1 and level 2 mentor training- either via the University of Southampton or through recognized prior learning. A further 8 hours are accrued through engagement with the mentor development activities and the compilation of a portfolio of practice.

The course has flexible timescales. If you are a mentor working with an ITE student teacher, this short course can run for the full academic year to align with your ongoing mentoring work with your student teacher and their likely developmental needs.

If you are a mentoring an ECT or other recently qualified teacher then the timescales could be condensed and the portfolio submission can take place at the end of either the Autumn, Spring or Summer terms.
